The is a part-time OPS Environmental Specialist I position (29 hours/week) in the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection.
The position is located at Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve (EBAP) in Fort Myers Beach.
Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is a shallow-water estuary which contains a diverse array of natural communities.

This position includes office and field duties necessary to coordinate and conduct estuary resource management activities, watershed coordination activities, education and outreach and all other program activities related to resource protection and management of the aquatic preserve.

Position Requirements

  1. Bachelor s degree with a major in natural science from an accredited college or university
  2. Valid Florida Driver s License

Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as program lead for the EBAP wading and diving bird rookery monitoring program.
Coordinate rookery program volunteers and maintain rookery volunteer database.
Organize, coordinate and conduct related resource management activities including rookery island cleanup efforts and signage maintenance.
Conduct data entry and analyses, generate reports, quality assurance activities, and work with partner agencies.

Coordinate and conduct routine vehicle, vessel and facility maintenance.
Oversee and coordinate vehicle and vessel repair as needed.
Maintain maintenance and repair documentation.

Assist with additional resource management activities including seagrass monitoring, continuous water quality datasonde program, water quality sampling, oyster monitoring and ERP resource site inspections.
Complete projects as identified in the EBAP management plan.

Assist with organizing, planning, advertising and executing public and private wading trips.
Assist with additional educational and outreach events and presentations.
Develop displays, pamphlets and posters.

Prepare routine paperwork (timesheet and activity reports) and assist with other administrative needs (purchasing, budget, grants).

Demonstrate support of Department leadership through actions and words when representing the Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

  1. Knowledge of Florida s wading and diving bird species, flora and fauna of Florida's submerged resources.
  2. Must be comfortable working in the field (including in the water) for extended periods of time and in potentially adverse conditions.
  3. Ability to use binoculars while on a moving vessel for extended periods of time.
  4. Must understand and practice safe boating operation.
  5. Have working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, Access, Publisher, Adobe and GIS
  6. Ability to collect, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data and prepare technical reports
  7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  9. Ability to work in a team or independently.
  10. Ability to conduct and complete work assignments without close supervision.
  11. Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous manner
  12. Knowledge of basic vehicle/vessel maintenance preferred

Licensure/registration/certification requirements:

  1. Florida Class E driver s license required
  2. Must meet the snorkeling validation requirements in accordance with the DEP Underwater Operations Manual
  3. Must meet DEP watercraft and trailering requirements

Working hours:
Part-time, 29 hours per week, Monday Friday; variable work schedule with an occasional weekend for educational outreach events and potential occasional travel.
This position has the potential to be increased to full-time (40 hours per week).
